Road — and Glass — Warriors

It seems like just minutes ago that the kids were heading back to school, the baseball play-offs were weeks away and Kim Kardashian was getting ready for a life of wedded bliss. What a difference two months makes. The past quartet of fortnights have flown by for our staff as well. That’s because they constitute an annual phenomena known as “trade show season.” We’ve been everywhere, man: Atlanta, Memphis, Toronto, Nashville, Milan, Seattle and Las Vegas, all since September 10. The Win-door show  in Toronto next week closes out trade show season 2011. While each show had its own distinct style and, in many cases, served different audiences, there were… Read More »

Five Things that Really Scare Me

Yup it’s Halloween. I just read how Halloween has now surpassed Christmas as the holiday for which people buy the most outdoor decorations. Sometimes I look at all the hoopla around this minor holiday with great amusement. I know that people love dressing up for it (we do it too. Take a look at our own annual Halloween Costume participants here). Other times I think the devil must be laughing his horned head off in you-know-where as he shouts with glee at how it’s grown. After all, cute little goblins and friendly ghosts have a way of just taking the edge off real evil, you know? So, for lots of… Read More »

9/11 Reminders

Our daily e-news service, usgnn.com,  includes some powerful remembrances of 9/11 today. I just added my own at the end. What’s yours. Please let us know by adding your comments below. COMMENT

Is It Really September?

Well yes  it is. It’s 10:50 a.m. on Labor Day here in the States and, as I write this, about half our staff is in the office with me and hard at work. Why? Because we have a perfect storm of events coming up next week, our annual company-wide 2012 planning meeting, followed by the GlassBuild America show (visit us in booth 2411) and the inaugural Auto Glass Week Conference and Competitions (visit us there too.). All three events are next week, hence our work here today, on final details, shipping and all.  Labor Day has caused me some reflection in two areas. First one is how much I like… Read More »

Songs of Angry Men

As has been the case almost all this year, the news just keeps coming and today there is something for everyone. As you might know, our company publishes a number of magazines concerning glass and we have a breaking story in almost every one. So here’s my take on a few of them: 1. To Thine Own Self be Trulite (USGlass magazine)—Sun Capital announced the highly anticipated new name for the trinity of  Arch-UGC-ACI Products (Vitro America’s new name). Which name emerged victorious? None of the above. The company’s new name is Trulite, which is actually an old name that Arch Aluminum acquired when it purchased a company of that… Read More »

Odds Are

The recent purchase of Vitro America’s assets by Sun Capital got me to thinking about Mickey Binswanger the other day. He was winding down his career about the time I got into the glass industry. Even at that young age, it was easy to recognize what a powerful force he, his family and his company were in the glass industry. So I figure he would be wondering right about now: What’s going to happen to Binswanger? For now, let me just focus on Binswanger the retailer and save the distribution company ACI for another time. Primarily a nationwide chain of auto and flat glass retail locations, Binswanger has particular strength… Read More »

Tweet, Tweet, Tweet

We don’t often talk about it, but our parent company, Key Communications Inc. offers quite a number of services and products. The magazines are listed to my right. We also have very popular daily e-news services for both the architectural glass industry (USGNN.com) and the auto glass industry (glassBYTEs.com). … among a variety of other things people might not know about such as market research and studies, focus groups, customized research and a variety of other marketing services. In fact, my own name on Twitter is Keycomm (follow me @Keycomm) and today I tried a social media experiment and tweeted each new thing I did today. Now granted, today was… Read More »
