Heart of Glass

People are the heroes of the COVID-19 health crisis we are living through right now. The news is full of them—the medical personnel risking their lives, the first responders, the neighbors helping neighbors—they are heroes all for their bravery, initiative and tenacity. And not to take a single thing from or in any way diminish these most courageous of individuals, glass is an inanimate kind hero in this crisis, too.

Time and time again during these past few weeks we have seen what glass has been able to give us that otherwise would have been lost to this virus …. The granddaughter joyously showing her grandfather her newly-placed engagement ring through a window …. An entire family serenading their matriarch with happy birthday through a glass front door as she turns 100 … a doctor unable to be with his family for fear of contaminating them, yet able to see his son’s first crawl across a backyard sliding glass door …. a couple married 64 years able to send a kiss through a nursing home window on their anniversary. These are just some of the moments nearly lost that glass saved and made into memories.

At a time when our ability to physically connect has been greatly diminished, glass has allowed us to preserve the most important parts of connection. At a time when isolation abounds, glass makes us feel less alone.

Let brick tout its strength and metals their versatility, let concrete herald its economy. No other material, none, can bring to us what glass has through this crisis.

Stay safe.
